Barbituates




Barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral) and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal), which are used to treat anxiety, tension, and sleep disorders. These drugs act to depress the central nervous system and are often called sleeping pills. There are many different types of barbiturates. The names of some common ones (and brand names) include Pentobarbital (Nembutal), Secobarbital (Seconal), Amobarbital (Amytal) and Phenobarbital (Luminal).

  • Barbs
  • Yellow Jackets
  • Blue Devils
  • Red Devils
  • Amy's
  • Rainbows

What Barbituates look like:

Barbituates come in capsule form in many different colors.



Methods of use:

  • Ingested orally

Short term effects:

  • Slurred speech
  • Staggering
  • Slowed reaction
  • Loss of inhibition
  • Intense emotions
  • Slowed breathing

Long term effects:

  • Impaired memory or judgement
  • Hostility
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Paranoia
  • Thoughts of suicid
